Catherine Strode

Hi folks! My name is Cay Strode (preferred pronouns: she/her/hers).  I'm a long-time Northern Californian, but I was born in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. I never learned to surf, but I did absorb Hawaii's love of good food. I will eat just about anything with Spam in it! :)

In Hawaiian culture, connection and community (ohana) are also deep values. When I think back to my childhood, I know these values are a big part of what led me to a teaching career.  I was also inspired to teach by wonderful professors along the way. I was a Political Science major at Occidental College in Los Angeles until an amazing English professor opened my eyes to the power of books and literature.  After earning my BA in English and Women's Studies, I went to graduate school in American Literature at the University of Rochester (in upstate New York, a very long way from the beaches of Hawaii). A few years later I was inspired by my volunteer work in an adult literacy program to pursue my love of teaching.  I went on to earn an MA in Writing Composition with a certificate in Post-Secondary Reading at San Francisco State University.

I've been teaching full-time in the English department at Woodland Community College since 2004, and I love what I do!
