Political Science Faculty, Yuba College
Marysville Campus Bldg: 700 Room: 708

Professor Lena Hsieh has been involved in government and politics since her high school days in Taiwan where the country's authoritarian regime ruled under martial law for forty years. Many freedoms and civil liberties that Americans enjoy were mere dreams for Taiwanese at the time. Professor Hsieh was a passionate activist in the democratization movement in the 1980s and 1990s that successfully democratized Taiwan. Now, she takes that same passion to her students at Yuba College helping them understand our American government, California state government, foreign governments, and international relations, and even more importantly encouraging her students to actively participate in our democracy.

In addition to her civic and political activism, Professor Hsieh has over twenty years of experience teaching government (Taiwan and American), political theory, and international relations at both the college/university and high school levels. Other professional experiences include being a Congressional Aide in Taiwan's legislature, Campaign Manager for a mayoral candidate, Media Director for a foundation promoting Taiwanese culture, and Conference Coordinator for a foreign policy thinktank.

Professor Hsieh's education includes a B.A. in Political Science from National Chengchi University (Taipei, Taiwan), an M.A. in Political Science from the University at Buffalo (SUNY, Buffalo, New York), and a Ph.D. in Political Science from National Taiwan University (Taipei, Taiwan).

Besides working with her Yuba College students and colleagues, Professor Hsieh enjoys gardening, volunteering, visiting science/space/nature hisotry museums, and spending time in the outdoors, hiking, appreciating nature and doing summer road trips with her family and friends. On top of that, she has two pets: a silly Taby cat named Tiger and an adorable hamster named Sumo. Both are super friendly and love to be held even by strangers.
