My passion is teaching, researching, and developing curriculum in the areas of Ethnic Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Native American Studies, Education and Leadership for over 15 years. As a first generaiton college student, Ethnic Studies saved my life. Schooling became interesting and with the support of many inspiring professors and leaders, I became a professor and leader too.
For over a decade now I have lead Ethnic Studies at Woodland Community College and taught Chicana/o Studies, History of Race and Ethnicity, Mexican American History, and Native American Studies. I am a former community educator and faculty in Chicana/o Studies, Education, and Liberal Studies. I earned a bachelor in Sociology and Women Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and then I earned a masters and a doctorate from the University of Utah in the Department of Education, Culture and Society. I have a certificate in Tribal Leadership and Governance from the California Tribal College, and working toward an Ethnic Studies Certificate at San Francisco State University.
I am the Founder of the California Community College Ethnic Studies Faculty Council and member of the Ethnic Studies Advisory Community for my local district. My publications and research interests include issues surrounding racial identity formations, subjugated knowledge, cultural citizenship, foodways and food justice education, Chicana/o indigeneity, intergenerational truma and healing, and practices of community-based leadership. I am a member of the Indigenous Caucus for the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS), among other associations.
I love the outdoors, gardening, Meso american food, art, and music (i.e. Las Cafeteras, Lila Downs, Ozomatli, etc.)
