Professor Biography

Dr. Cook is a lecturer in the Ethnic Studies department at CSU, Sacramento. He has a Doctor of Education and a Bachelor/Masters in Ethnic Studies that provided the framework for his teaching style in the field of Ethnic Studies. His teaching style relies heavily on the scaffolding process as theorized by Vygotsky (1968). Additionally, he holds high the banner of "ethics of justice" and the "ethics of care" as defined by Nevarez & Wood (2014).

Dr. Cook’s most recent research interest include investigating how to improve orientations at the community college level so that all students begin their post-secondary journey with viable tools that may improve students chances of going the distance. He is a third-generation teacher whose family history includes first in educators post slavery in the late 19th century. There is a fourth-generation teacher. He proclaims that his most cherished accomplishment is creating a safe space for students to engage with counter narrative histories in a manner that encourages participation and the well-being of one to the other.
